Shades of Gray Paint: Medium Gray

I'm back with another dining room update! You can see the chandelier we installed and the old sideboard we purchased. I decided I wanted to keep with the gray palette of the family room/kitchen and foyer which are all very open and close to the dining room but I wanted a medium shade of gray instead of a light gray. Since the dining room is so open, has lots of white molding and we don't spend time in there every day, I knew it could handle a darker color.

Here is the before with builder beige and the after with Sherwin Williams Gray Matters.

Now, here is how we arrived at the lovely Gray Matters paint color. As I explained in Shades of Gray Paint for light gray, before painting any room we get a ton of paint chips and tape them up on the wall. We look at them in various lights/times of day etc. You don't want your paint color to only look great in natural light.

You also want your paint color to go well with other paint colors nearby so I included that paint chip among the ones I was deciding on (it is the X in the photo below). Of course paint on the wall will look different (sometimes slightly different and sometimes very different) from paint chips. So we select several we that we like (usually 3-5) and get paint samples and paint those on the wall and look at them in different lights/times of day again. We chose Gray Matters, Classic French Gray (which was my favorite on the chip), Cityscape (one shade darker than Gray Matters) and Gray Shingle. They are all numbered below and you can click on the photo to make it larger.

After seeing a few photos on Pinterest, I wanted to also paint the inside rectangles of the coffered ceiling so we tested the colors out there too. Eric w as hesitant about this look so we agreed during painting we would just paint 1 out of the 4 rectangles to ensure we liked it before painting the rest.

We pretty quickly ruled out 2 and 3 for being too dark so then it was down to 1 and 4. Gray Shingle (4) seemed to have a purple or brown undertones depending on the lighting. Since Front Porch, our light gray, was a true gray we liked the idea of more of a true medium gray too so Gray Matters seemed to fit that perfectly and looked great with Front Porch in the adjoining areas as far as we could tell.

So we spent a Saturday painting! We used Gray Matters in flat no-VOC paint. We left the bottom part of the wall under the chair-rail with the picture frame trim all white. We liked the way the painted coffered ceiling looked so we did all 4 rectangles.

There are still a few places to touch-up but other than that we really love the newly painted dining room. Gray Matters was the perfect medium gray paint color for this room.

Here where you see Sherwin Williams Gray Matters in the Dining Room you can also see Sherwin Williams Front Porch in the foyer and how well they flow.

Hooray another builder beige room bites the dust! Anyone else been working on painting projects?

What I Wore: Chambray and Leggings 2 ways

I love wearing chambray with leggings because it is so comfortable and stylish. Of course they look great with boots as you see here but would also be cute with flats or with keds-like shoes for an even more casual look. I wore the first look for a day of running errands and such. The 2nd look is from driving down to Columbia and having a day out shopping and having lunch with my SIL (don't worry it was prior to Lent). As you can see here my chambray tunic top is just long enough to be worn without the tank since I'm short but after discovering these awesome layering tanks from Target a couple months ago, it makes the outfit even more comfy plus can add a pop of color if desired. This combo is perfect for travelling.

Lent

Now that Easter is about two weeks away, I thought I'd share what I decided to do for Lent. Since I hesitated to write this post in the first place, I will preface with: this post is not to brag about what I decided to give up for Lent as that is not the point but it is to share my thoughts and what I've learned so far this Lent. I do believe in doing something for Lent (that is not easy to do) but not for the sake of just choosing something to give up for Lent. It doesn't have to be giving up sweets or alcohol or something material. It could be giving up lying, gossip or negativity. Or it could be taking up something positive during Lent like volunteering or daily acts of kindness, etc. The purpose is to be more attentive to God and also remember the ultimate sacrifice he made for us, Jesus. It is a great time of year to strengthen your faith and focus with Easter right around the corner.

This year I decided to give up shopping for Lent. You may have noticed with all of my Style and What I Wore posts that over the last year or so I've had a bigger interest in style and shopping. I realized I spent a good amount of time shopping/browsing online and at stores on the weekends. I didn't limit this to just clothes and shoes shopping but also home decor shopping in person and online. If you have followed my blog for very long, you know how much I love HomeGoods and frequent shop at HomeGoods and I also spent time shopping online at IKEA, World Market, Target, etc. So this type of shopping was also included. No this does not include grocery shopping haha. If only the purpose of Lent were to give up things you don't particularly want to do :)

For Lent, Eric and I also decided together to read Beyond Ordinary. This is a marriage book about going beyond an ordinary marriage (as the title suggests) to have an extraordinary marriage that is the type of marriage God envisions for us (sounds awesome right?). One that asks what I can do for the other person and not what the other person can do for me.  And how to steer away from thoughts and behaviors that can make your marriage just ordinary. It is written by two youth pastors about their marriage and faith journey full of ups and downs on their path to an extraordinary marriage. The book has parts written with the voice of the wife and the husband, great for out-loud reading... yes we read to each other. It also has questions to think about and apply to your own life at the end of each chapter.  It is not your typical marriage book... like those ones that say here are the keys to a great marriage or to understanding your spouse or to communicating better, etc. etc. It is a real story and exposes what a real marriage journey was for these two. My friend Katie recommended this book to me and while we are not finished with the book yet, I can already say I'd recommend it to anyone in a marriage or serious relationship.

Has it been easy to give up shopping during Lent? Well of course not but if it was something easy to give up then it wouldn't be a sacrifice. I made sure to route all shopping emails that I receive into a different folder that I can ignore since they are not in my inbox. And not having new items in my closet has enabled me to be more creative and rework the items in my closet. It has caused me to really rethink clothes shopping and the clothes I wear as a whole too. In decor shopping, it was definitely hard not to make a weekly trip to Marshalls or HomeGoods to see what they had new that I might need for our home. But I also didn't have that feeling of disappointment each time when they didn't have that perfect lamp/rug/vase/etc. that I'd been looking for week after week. Please tell me other shopping fans know this feeling? So it has been surprisingly refreshing to not focus on that for a little bit and know that decorating our home is truly a process and takes time... a lot of time and that is okay.

Did you give up or do anything different during Lent? Did it teach you anything surprising? This is the first year I have given up something (shopping) and also decided to do something positive (the book) at the same time and it was nice to pair the two together.

What I Wore: Black Jeans - Day to Night

So normally I work from home one day a week and usually that is on Friday (as it is for many in my group) since there are less meetings that day and less people in the office. Several Fridays ago I had a big meeting in person on Friday so I did not work from home but we were going out to Food Truck Friday after work with friends and so I wanted to wear something where I wouldn't need to completely change outfits to make it more casual.

I don't usually wear jeans to work (or a graphic-ish top for that matter) since that doesn't qualify as our business casual but since these are black it's not easy to tell they are jeans especially when dressed up with a black blazer and there were less people in the office who might notice.

If you had a more casual day and a dressier evening you could flip flop what I have below.
