Stair Rail Wood Snowman

I have a cheap and easy Christmas DIY project that looks like you bought it somewhere.... a wooden snowman made out of a stair rail!! Katie and I found this on pinterest and decided to make our own. Here is how my snowman turned out.

Here is how you can make one of your own.

Supplies:
-1 wooden stair rail from the decking section at Lowes - about $3
-2 square end pieces from the decking section at Lowes - about $5
-White paint
-Black paint
-Orange paint or paint pen
-scrap fabric for the scarf
-button
-wood glue

2 square end pieces

Except for the wood pieces, I had everything on hand and I'm sure many of you do too... so the supplies ended up being less than $10! There are 2 different decking stair rails to choose from. I had a craft day one Saturday morning and Katie and Danielle came over so we could each make one.

First cut several inches off one of the ends of the stair rail for however tall you want the hat to be. (Later one of the square end pieces will go in between the cut pieces for the hat bottom like the 2nd picture below)

On the opposite end, screw in the other square end piece for the snowman stand. Paint this piece white.
Paint the snowman face. I used a sharpie marker for the eyes and mouth and an orange paint pen for the nose.

The girls snowman faces all turned out unique. Later Katie painted over her nose and added a wooden nose using the end of a wooden skewer which is another idea.

Paint the other square end piece and the piece you cut off for the hat with black paint. Screw the black end piece to the top of the snowman. Use wood glue to attach the black snowman hat piece that you previously cut off to the top of the black end piece.

Tie your fabric scrap around the snowman's neck area. Do snowmen even have necks? Regardless we know they need a scarf!

Finally, glue the button on in the desired spot on the snowman.

AND your snowman is complete!!

I put mine on our front porch to merrily greet people at the door. He is just fabulous don't you think?!

So go make one and let me know what you think. These would make great Christmas gifts too! I made one for my work executive who had a Christmas party for our team.

  2. Hi, thank you so much for posting the tutorial on how you did the hat! I really loves this tutorial and yours is the only one that I could find. I know that you posted this two years ago, but I am hoping to make several this year. One is going to be for our apartment and another set is going to be a gift for friends. I was wondering how hard is it to cut this spindle at the top so that you can make the hat? I have never cut wood before and don't have any tools to use. What should I use to cut it? Or can you have that cut at the store? I do own a hot knife, do you think that would work? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

    1. Hi Nicole, I would just ask the people at Lowes or Home Depot or wherever you go if they would cut it for you. They are usually really nice about doing so especially since this would be an easy cut for them. We used a miter saw but I'm thinking doing it with a knife might be kind of difficult. Best of luck with the snowmen!

  6. Simple and interesting. I love decorations that last and your snow man is one of them. By the way, which tool you used to cut out the rail? And can you name some of other tools needed for making this piece of art? I want to start on a new project but I want to check with you on the list of equipment needed.

    1. Hi Byran, the rail piece comes just like that from a home improvement store and then I used a circular saw to cut that small part off but if you don’t have that, usually they don’t mind doing that for you right at a big box home improvement store
